For Alastair Buchan, a partner at the financial advisory firm St. James’s Place Middle East (SJP), two places hold profound meaning: his homeland, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, known for its rugged cliffs and stunning coastline, and the much warmer Dubai, which Alastair has seen transform dramatically over the last 25 years.
“Aberdeenshire and Dubai are vital to me,” Alastair shares. “I first visited Dubai in 2001 for a holiday and returned every year after that,” he reflects on his bond with the Emirate. “The ambition and vision for Dubai, especially that of Sheikh Mohammed, captivated me so much that I bought a property in 2003.”
While on the surface these locations seem worlds apart, they share a connection through thriving oil and gas industries and vibrant professional communities. Alastair has spent his career advising energy sector professionals on their finances, a skillset increasingly sought after in Dubai.
After moving to SJP’s office in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) from their granite townhouse in Aberdeenshire, Alastair enjoys offering expert financial advice to a dynamic and diverse community, helping clients from varied backgrounds achieve their financial aspirations.
“It’s an amazing place to work,” Alastair remarks about the DIFC. “It offers so much to workers, residents, and visitors alike. It’s a very positive environment.”
“The positivity, can-do attitude, convenience, and harmonious coexistence of different nationalities, along with a sense of safety, make it an appealing global business hub,” he adds.
Dubai has been dear to Alastair for decades, and his chance to move came when the London Stock Exchange-listed advisory giant received a license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) to establish operations in the city two years ago. Since then, the firm’s client base has expanded as the UAE has become one of the most desirable places to live and work globally.
Alastair is part of the team bringing SJP’s goal-oriented, personalized advice to the UAE, contributing to its growing client list. With over one million global customers and US$250 billion in international assets under management, the UAE is a key growth market for the firm, which also operates in the UK, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
A Trusted Adviser for Generations
A financial adviser for much of his career, Alastair’s interest in financial management was sparked early, learning about money from his father, an accountant.
“My father taught me to manage my money when I was young,” he recalls. “We started our first business together when I was 16.”
This early education in finance shaped Alastair’s philosophy on money management, which he continues to share with clients today. He views financial planning as a tool to provide individuals with choices and empower their lives.
“Financial stability gives you the power and freedom to say no to what drains you and yes to what matters,” he says. “It gives you control over your time, a precious resource.”
Alastair has been with SJP since 1996, joining when it was J. Rothschild Assurance, which became St. James’s Place in 1997. Over the years, he has gained experience advising on investments, taxes, retirement plans, protection, and business strategies.
The SJP model focuses on developing holistic, long-term wealth plans tailored to individual needs, a practice Alastair is excited to bring to the UAE. This contrasts with the product-focused advice common in the region historically.
“I believe trust in the UAE’s financial advice industry has suffered in the past, and SJP’s presence will help restore it.”
Since relocating to Dubai, Alastair has advised numerous UK expats who have made the same move, while maintaining strong connections with energy sector professionals. His clients include business owners and professionals from Dubai’s multinational community.
As more people from countries like the UK relocate to the UAE for work and living, the demand for complex financial advice is rising. The needs of internationally mobile individuals are often multifaceted, with assets and tax obligations in various countries.
This trend will continue to drive the need for specialized financial advice, Alastair notes. “The UAE is a top destination for wealth migration, increasing the need for cross-border advisory services and integrated solutions across jurisdictions.”
Alastair views financial advice as a means to build lasting wealth for future generations. Helping clients achieve long-term goals is his favorite part of the job.
“You can significantly impact clients’ lives, helping them plan for the future and achieve their goals,” he says. “We work to ensure clients are financially organized and their families protected, aiming to build relationships that make us trusted advisers for generations.”
Building a Foundation for Growth
Strong regulatory and legal frameworks have fueled significant economic growth in the UAE recently. Alastair believes the region is well-prepared for the future due to the strength of the DIFC and government initiatives to enhance financial services and literacy. These efforts will benefit future generations.
“The UAE actively promotes financial education and literacy through schools, banks, and corporate programs,” he says. “Empowering the younger generation and workforce enables smarter financial decisions. With crypto, real estate, FX, and other traditional investments vying for hard-earned Dirhams, financial education is more crucial than ever.”
Like many of his clients who’ve recently moved from abroad, Alastair is eager to build a new life in his adopted home, aiding individuals in achieving prosperity and maximizing wealth from the UAE’s abundant opportunities.
“I see myself with SJP Middle East long-term, continuing to build and grow trusted client relationships in the region,” he says. “As the expat community grows, so does the need for trusted, tailored advice. Having been with SJP for nearly 29 years but only recently joined the Dubai office, I’m keen to strengthen our presence in the UAE as we have in the UK.”
