Australia-China Military Tensions Rise Over Aircraft Inciden

The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense stated in a statement: “We urge Australia to immediately cease violations, provocations, and media exaggeration, and to strictly regulate the movements of its naval and air forces on the front lines.” The ministry added that it had lodged a formal protest with Canberra regarding the incident, noting that it occurred near the Paracel Islands, where Australia claimed a Chinese fighter jet fired flares near one of its maritime patrol aircraft, describing the incident as “unsafe and unprofessional.” Australia accused a Chinese military aircraft of firing flares “in close proximity” to one of its patrol planes over the South China Sea, according to a statement from the Australian Ministry of Defense on Monday. The ministry indicated that the Australian government expressed its concerns to Beijing over the matter, confirming that the Australian P-8A aircraft did not suffer any damage, and its crew was unharmed following the incident on Sunday. This marks the second time this year that Australia has accused China of firing flares near an Australian aircraft in the region, as Canberra had made a similar accusation last February. Beijing responded at the time by stating that the Australian aircraft “deliberately entered its airspace,” and that its response was “legal and controlled.”
