Bayern Munich, the reigning German champions, aren’t eager to label themselves as favorites or underdogs for their Champions League campaign this season. However, they approach their opening match against Chelsea on Wednesday with a strong sense of confidence, according to striker Harry Kane.
Despite former president and board member Uli Hoeness expressing skepticism about their European prospects, likening their chances to those of mid-table club Hoffenheim, Bayern had an impressive performance last Saturday. Kane scored twice in their commanding 5-0 victory over Hamburg SV, marking their third consecutive league win.
Concerns among fans have arisen due to a smaller squad and missed transfer targets, questioning Bayern’s competitiveness at the highest level. “Bayern always aims to win every competition,” Kane noted during a press conference in response to Hoeness’ comments. “I wouldn’t call us underdogs, even against Europe’s top teams. It’s a long journey, hopefully until May, but we want to start strong in the league phase tomorrow.”
“We believe we can defeat any team at the Allianz Arena. We’re in great form, and to beat Chelsea, we must deliver our best performance. They’re currently doing well in the Premier League and shined at the Club World Cup.”
Since their last title win in 2020, Bayern has struggled in Europe, advancing past the quarterfinals only once in the past five seasons.
Coach Vincent Kompany emphasized that discussing title chances is premature. “We’ll see what unfolds. Our focus is entirely on this moment. Winning the Champions League is always the goal, a standard every Bayern player holds,” Kompany remarked.
“Tomorrow’s match is our sole focus. The dream is alive, but tomorrow’s task is paramount. We aim to reach the top eight by winning six games; it all starts with winning tomorrow.”
