Cairo’s Efforts for Humanitarian Truce in Sudan

During his meeting with the European Union’s envoy to the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, the Egyptian Foreign Minister explained that “the efforts exerted by Cairo through the international quartet mechanism and the African Union aim to achieve a humanitarian truce to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, establish a comprehensive ceasefire, and initiate an inclusive political process.” He emphasized the need to support the Hope Government led by Kamal Idris and reject any attempts to form a parallel government, calling on the international community to fulfill its financial commitments to Sudan and share the burden with neighboring countries. The war that broke out between the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023 has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. The city of El-Fasher, the battleground in Darfur, suffered destruction due to shelling. The United Nations estimates that children make up about half of the 260,000 civilians trapped in the city, who have been almost entirely cut off from external aid.
