Starting October 1, 2025, Emirates will prohibit the use of any power bank onboard its flights, as announced in their statement. Passengers are allowed to bring one power bank under specific conditions outlined below, but these power banks cannot be used to charge devices or be recharged themselves using the aircraft’s power outlets during the flight.

Key Rules from Emirates:

  • Passengers can carry a single power bank with a capacity under 100 Watt Hours.

  • Power banks cannot be used to charge devices during the flight.

  • Recharging power banks via the aircraft’s power supply is forbidden.

  • All transported power banks must display capacity rating information.

  • Power banks should not be stored in the overhead bins; they must be placed in the seat pocket or under the seat in front.

  • Power banks are not allowed in checked luggage (existing rule).

Reason for Policy Change:

Following a thorough safety assessment, Emirates is taking a proactive approach to minimize risks associated with power banks. The surge in power bank usage has led to more lithium battery-related incidents in aviation. These batteries, often lithium-ion or lithium-polymer, are portable chargers but pose risks when overcharged or damaged, potentially leading to thermal runaway—a rapid and uncontrolled temperature rise causing fires, explosions, or toxic gas release.

Although many devices have safeguards against overcharging, basic power banks might not, increasing risk. Emirates’ new rules aim to mitigate these risks by banning power bank use onboard. By keeping them in accessible areas, cabin crew can swiftly manage any fire incidents.
