The Israeli newspaper ‘Maariv’ reported this Thursday morning that the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, rejected the Canadian Prime Minister’s remarks, claiming it as a reward for the Palestinian Hamas movement. The Israeli Foreign Ministry clarified that Mark Carney’s statement represents a change in the Canadian government’s stance, alleging it harms efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and a plan to release hostages.
Earlier today, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his country would recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. Carney said during a press conference, ‘Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 2025.’
This stance comes at a time when the Palestinian issue is witnessing varied European diplomatic movements, with France preceding Spain, Ireland, and Norway in announcing recognition of the State of Palestine. Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron declared his decision before the United Nations General Assembly in September.
He continued, ‘A ceasefire must be immediately achieved, all hostages released, and wide-scale humanitarian aid provided. Furthermore, Hamas must be disarmed, and the Gaza Strip secured and rebuilt.’
French President Macron added, ‘A viable Palestinian state that guarantees its sustainability and accepts disarmament and full recognition of Israel must be established, allowing it to contribute to the security of everyone in the Middle East.’
