Chelsea overcame an early challenge when Crystal Palace saw Eberechi Eze’s goal controversially disallowed in a scrappy 0-0 Premier League encounter on Sunday.
Despite dominating with over 70% possession under the warm southwest London sun, Chelsea, fresh from their Club World Cup victory in the U.S. last month, couldn’t assert their dominance against the FA Cup holders.
Coach Enzo Maresca handed starts to new signings Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion and Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, yet neither could break the deadlock, with Chelsea managing just three shots on target from 19 attempts.
Key player Cole Palmer appeared off-form, contributing to several inaccurate shots.
In the 13th minute, the visitors seemed to score, but referee Darren England reviewed the pitchside monitor, ruling that Palace captain Marc Guehi’s shove on Moises Caicedo was too close to Chelsea’s defensive wall during Eze’s free kick.
This technical decision was based on the rule that attackers must be at least one meter from a defending wall of three or more, with England explaining his call to Guehi.
Having finished fourth last season and winning the Conference League, Chelsea is expected to improve this season after bolstering their attack.
Substitutes Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and 18-year-old Estevao were introduced in the second half, with the young Brazilian making a notable impact on the right wing.
Eze, linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, acknowledged the away fans by applauding as they chanted his name post-match.
