Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, is not backing down from using the “kiss cam” at their concerts, despite the recent scandal involving ex-Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and former HR head Kristin Cabot.
During Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in Hull, England, Martin addressed the audience about last month’s incident in Massachusetts, as reported by Page Six.
“We’ve been using [the Jumbotron] for years, and only recently did it become a… well,” Martin said, alluding to the incident.
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. We’re going to keep doing it to meet more of you,” he continued.
Engaging with fans, Martin read signs from the crowd and thanked a fan who had attended multiple concerts, saying, “You’ve been to three of our shows in the past three months.”
“You were at that Boston concert,” the Fix You singer noted.
“Thank you for coming back after that incident,” he added, referencing the moment when Byron and Cabot were caught on the “kiss cam” at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
The controversy began on July 16 when Byron and Cabot were seen on the “kiss cam” at a Coldplay concert.
Byron was shown with his arm around Kristin, and both quickly hid their faces upon realizing they were on screen. Kristin covered her face, and Byron ducked out of view. Their embarrassed reaction came as Martin joked from the stage, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy.”
The video went viral, leading Astronomer to place Byron and Cabot on leave. Byron resigned as CEO the next day.
