It wasn’t until my first visit to Khasab in 2023 that I truly appreciated the breathtaking beauty of Oman.
Since that moment, visiting Salalah has been on my bucket list, and this year, that aspiration became a reality.
Nestled in Oman’s southern Dhofar region, Salalah stands out in the Gulf. Often called the ‘perfume capital of Arabia,’ it is renowned for its rich frankincense legacy, coconut-fringed beaches, and pleasant climate year-round.
My husband and I traveled there in late August, right in the midst of Khareef; the annual monsoon period when mist envelops the mountains, light rain refreshes the city, and the landscape bursts into lush greenery.
From June through September, Salalah transforms into a sub-tropical oasis, reminiscent more of Sri Lanka or Kerala in India than the Arabian Peninsula.
For us, the cool breeze, occasional drizzle, and vibrant greenery provided a refreshing escape from Dubai’s summer heat.
Yet, what truly made our trip unforgettable was our stay at the exquisite Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara.

First impressions
Just 15km from Salalah International Airport, the resort is conveniently located near the city center yet remains a peaceful retreat.
The grand entrance captivated us immediately—an elegant fusion of Omani culture, contemporary design, and serene charm. We were greeted with warm smiles and a unique welcome drink—frankincense-infused juice presented in a clay pot. Sweet, invigorating, and soothing, it perfectly set the tone for the days ahead.
Home away from home
Our stay was in a spacious one-bedroom garden-view pool villa. Airy and open, it blended minimalist design with Omani influences and modern amenities.
Featuring handcrafted furniture, rich textures, and thoughtful touches like a sketchbook and deck of cards for rainy evenings, the villa instantly felt like a home.
The courtyard featured a private pool surrounded by greenery, with a canopy bed ideal for lazy afternoons.
Al Baleed Resort offers plenty of accommodations—136 rooms and villas, many with private pools, terraces, or balconies with views of the Arabian Sea, lagoon, or gardens.
For ultimate luxury, the Royal Beach Pool Villa offers panoramic views of the sandy bay.
Room rates start at about Dh1,000 per night, rising to Dh2,300 based on category and season. Villas start at Dh2,000 per night. (Prices vary by season and availability.)

Dining by the sea
With four on-site restaurants, meals were never dull. We began our mornings with a sumptuous buffet at Sakalan, overlooking the beachfront. At Al Mina, Mediterranean cuisine paired beautifully with the sea breeze. For a more exotic experience, Mekong offered Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes by the private lagoon. The Dakar Jazz Lounge provided a cozy spot for slow evenings with a book, music, and a drink.
The resort’s substantial farm, managed by ‘farm guru’ Adil, impressed us most. Fresh honey, vegetables, fruits, and herbs are harvested for the kitchens, making ‘farm to table’ a reality.
Exploring Salalah

Salalah itself is a destination worth exploring. The city is well-connected, with direct flights from Dubai and Sharjah.
During Khareef, its beauty flourishes with the energized waterfalls of Ayn Athum and Ayn Korr, serene lakes and mountains of Wadi Darbat appealing to photographers, and a coastline with pristine beaches for the relaxed traveler. The blend of misty hills, lush valleys, and turquoise waters makes Salalah unique in the region.
More than just a stay
Back at the resort, the Anantara Spa offers Omani beauty rituals, Thai massage, Ayurveda, and sound healing. Fitness enthusiasts can exercise indoors, at the jungle gym outdoors, or with a personal trainer. Kids have fun at the kids’ club with activities from swimming to cooking classes.
A private lagoon offers boat rides to the nearby archaeological museum, and a beach stretch invites for a swim.
Verdict
Salalah during Khareef is pure enchantment—misty mountains, endless greenery, and gentle rain. Combined with the hospitality of its people and the luxury of Al Baleed Resort, it’s more than just a vacation. For those seeking to disconnect, relax, and be pampered, it’s a must-visit.
