This morning, Saturday, ‘Al-Taqa’ reported that Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Kareem Badawi, stated that the ministry aims to increase gas production to between 6.4 and 6.6 billion cubic feet per day over the next five years. Badawi explained that the increase in gas production in Egypt will be supported by Mediterranean gas exploration operations, with major investments from global companies like Italy’s ‘Eni’ and the British oil company ‘BP’. He confirmed that the year 2026 will witness the drilling of 14 exploratory wells in the Mediterranean, with targeted reserves amounting to about 12 trillion cubic feet of gas, representing a significant boost to secure energy supplies and improve Egypt’s export balance.

The country is rapidly moving towards bringing discovered projects into the production phase to reduce reliance on imports and achieve stability in the electrical system during peak summer periods, relying on growing capabilities in managing the national energy infrastructure. The platform reported that the upcoming drilling program is part of an integrated strategy to maximize the utilization of Mediterranean gas resources, after the region has become a major hub for energy supplies in Eastern Europe and North Africa in recent years.

In just 10 months, the ministry’s teams successfully prepared platforms for regasification vessels and connected them to the national gas network, enabling the reception and pumping of gas with a capacity of up to 2.25 billion cubic feet per day through three main platforms in Ain Sokhna. Egypt possesses three fully operational regasification vessels, in addition to a fourth vessel in Jordan, enhancing the sustainability and increasing the flexibility of operating the national network in facing any global disruptions. The minister emphasized that coordination between state institutions and global energy companies will contribute to transforming Egypt into a regional hub for the trade and exchange of Mediterranean gas by developing ports, liquefaction stations, and increasing transportation and storage capacities.
