Forced Displacement and Palestinian Rights

Ammon quoted Momani saying that forced displacement is a “war crime and a crime against humanity” prohibited by international law. He emphasized that the right of return is a fixed, inherent, human, and legal right, affirming that neither the Palestinian people nor the countries of the region, particularly Jordan, accept these practices.

The minister warned that the policy of displacement represents a “flagrant assault on the rights of the Palestinian people, their land, and their state, and a declaration of war on the sovereignty of states.” He described the ideas advocating displacement as “indicative of an outdated, racist mentality that is outside the system of human values.”

In response to extremist calls, Momani referred to history, saying, “Anyone who thinks they can impose their sovereignty over Jerusalem unjustly has not read a single line of history,” noting the historical Hashemite guardianship over the holy city.

The minister also criticized the “starvation” policy pursued by the Israeli authorities, describing it as a “hateful policy that reveals the moral and political bankruptcy of the extreme Israeli right.” He concluded his statement by affirming that the establishment of a Palestinian state is an inalienable right and that the Palestinian people will achieve their right to self-determination “despite the extreme Israeli right,” praising the countries that announced their intention to recognize the Palestinian state, describing their stance as “standing on the side of justice and the right side of history.”

He stressed that Jordan stands within a unified Arab front rejecting displacement and that attempts at ethnic cleansing will end in defeat and remain “a stain of shame on those who committed them.”

Earlier, the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned last Wednesday’s statements by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding the annexation of most of the West Bank to Israeli sovereignty, describing them as a “dangerous escalation” and “a flagrant violation of international law.”

The ministry expressed in an official statement published on its platform on “X” its “outright rejection of the incursion into the occupied Palestinian territories” and his statements described as “hostile and racist,” which included calls for annexing the West Bank and preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state, along with threats to the Palestinian National Authority. The ministry considered these actions a clear challenge to international will supporting the two-state solution.
