Germany, the four-time world champions, are determined to secure victory in the 2026 World Cup, as stated by coach Julian Nagelsmann on Wednesday prior to their initial qualifier against Slovakia on Thursday.

Germany will launch their World Cup Group A qualifying journey in Bratislava, followed by hosting Northern Ireland on September 7 in Cologne.

Nagelsmann emphasized their eagerness to start strong in their quest to qualify for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.

“Setting goals is essential. It’s challenging for a team or individual to navigate life without a goal worth striving for,” Nagelsmann mentioned at a press conference when questioned if aiming to win the World Cup was too ambitious.

Germany was eliminated in the group stage during the last two World Cup editions, and some domestic polls indicate not all fans share Nagelsmann’s optimism.

“I believe it’s healthy that we all aspire to win the World Cup. I’m 100% certain no player would disagree, or else they shouldn’t join us,” Nagelsmann stated.

With Luxembourg also in Group A, Germany is heavily favored to advance.

“However, we must concentrate on the process, on each game,” he said. “Avoid moments of doubt due to the big goal. The process is crucial to achieving our goals.”

Germany, having been eliminated in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals during Nagelsmann’s first tournament, also faced defeat in their last two matches in June against Portugal and France in the Nations League.

“It’s about rhythm,” Nagelsmann noted. “I hope we stabilize as a team and experience fewer moments like after the last two losses. Winning matches and qualifying is vital, and we aim to do it with dominance.”
