On Sunday, India triumphed over Pakistan by seven wickets in the Asia Cup, marking the first encounter between the countries since their military conflict in May. However, tensions lingered as Indian players exited the field without exchanging handshakes with their Pakistani counterparts.

India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, justified this action at the post-match press conference, stating that the team was “aligned with the government and the Board of Control for Cricket in India” in their decision not to shake hands with the Pakistani team.

Despite calls to boycott the T20 match, India participated, maintaining their stance since the nations haven’t engaged in a bilateral Test series following the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which were attributed to Pakistani militants.

The hostilities in May resulted in over 70 casualties due to missile, drone, and artillery exchanges before a ceasefire was established.

The conflict was sparked by an April 22 attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi accused Pakistan of supporting—a claim Islamabad denies.

Pakistan’s head coach, Mike Hesson, expressed “disappointment” regarding India’s decision, saying, “We were prepared to shake hands at the match’s conclusion.” He added, “We approached them, but they had already retreated to the changing room, which was a disappointing way to end the match.”

During the post-match presentation, Suryakumar described the match against Pakistan as “just another game” and dedicated the victory to the Indian army.

“We stand with the victims’ families of the Pahalgam terror attack and express our solidarity,” Suryakumar stated, “We dedicate today’s win to the armed forces.”

Following the game, Pakistan’s management issued a statement protesting to match referee Andy Pycroft, citing that “the behavior of Indian players was against the spirit of sportsmanship.” Consequently, skipper Salman Agha did not attend the post-match ceremony.

With two wins from two matches, India is on the verge of advancing to the tournament’s Super Fours stage, with their next group match against Oman on Friday.

Pakistan faces the UAE next on Wednesday and, despite the loss to India, they are expected to progress to the next stage.
