The vote comes as a prelude to presenting the draft resolution to the general assembly of the council for a first reading, despite the opposition from the coordinator for prisoner and missing persons affairs in the office of the Israeli Prime Minister, Gal Hirsch, and other professional entities.
Times of Israel reported on Sunday evening that the Israeli parliamentary committee for national security held a session to discuss the draft law, despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s opposition and Gal Hirsch’s efforts to cancel the deliberations and limit them to the Israeli security and political mini-cabinet “the cabinet”.
The draft law was supported by four members against just one objection, despite the objection of the committee’s legal advisor, who emphasized that “voting cannot take place during the summer session.” Opposition forces attacked the move, considering it “illegal”.
The legal department of the Knesset’s National Security Committee warned that “the vote on the prisoner execution bill is invalid,” adding that “the legal advisor of the committee and the Knesset’s legal advisor agreed not to conduct the vote during the Knesset recess and that committee members must hear the positions of security and professional entities before voting, both conditions have not yet been met.”
The draft law proposed by the Knesset member from the “Otzma Yehudit” party, Limor Son Har-Melech, was previously rejected due to the opposition of the ruling coalition led by Netanyahu and concerns that it might harm efforts towards Israelis held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
