Celebrating 25 years since her Oscar-nominated debut in Almost Famous, Kate Hudson reflects on her legendary role as Penny Lane.
Almost Famous, a 2000 American comedy-drama, was crafted by Cameron Crowe and features stars like Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Kate Hudson, Patrick Fugit, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The actress reminisced about initially landing the role of Anita, later given to Zooey Deschanel, and her efforts to persuade Crowe to cast her as Penny Lane, as reported by Deadline.
“Originally, Sarah Polley was set to portray Penny Lane, with Brad Pitt as Russell. When they withdrew, I was the sole cast member,” Hudson shared. “I asked Cameron if I could audition for Penny Lane. Initially, he was hesitant. After four auditions, he finally asked, ‘Do you want to be Penny Lane?’ I exclaimed, ‘Oh my god, Yes!'” Deadline reported her saying.
Hudson portrayed the spirited music enthusiast opposite Patrick Fugit’s eager journalist William Miller, a character inspired by Crowe’s youthful days at Rolling Stone. Billy Crudup became Russell Hammond, Stillwater’s guitarist.
Hudson noted, “This was all magical for me, as it transformed my life and career trajectory.”
The film brought Hudson her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and won Best Film — Musical or Comedy. Crowe also clinched the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
