Moscow – Sputnik. Plutonium is used only as fuel for nuclear power plants, while it is seen as a promising fuel for energy companies, including startups. According to Politico, more than 20% of the plutonium used in nuclear power plants will come from plutonium pits used in nuclear weapons production. At the same time, the United States does not produce sufficient quantities of plutonium pits. Reports indicate that the Department of Energy is requesting 25 tons of plutonium for civilian purposes.
