Predicting Heart Attack Complications

Even after successful treatment, heart attack patients may suffer from serious complications such as myocardial fibrosis (the formation of rough scar tissue in the heart) or heart failure, a condition where the heart cannot pump blood, according to the study published in the medical journal “RMG”. To predict these consequences, doctors use international risk scales “GRACE 2.0”, “TIMI”, and “CADILLAC”, which consider clinical and laboratory data, including age, heart rate, and blood pressure. Another problem is that these scales do not consider molecular indicators, which may indicate a higher risk of complications.

University specialists proposed a composite approach based on a comprehensive assessment: using the GRACE 2.0 scale, along with analyzing biological indicators (substances whose concentration increases in the body) for myocardial stress – a condition where the heart is under increased stress. During a myocardial infarction, their level rises, so the substances secreted by the heart muscle under conditions of increased stress can be detected in the patient’s blood serum.

Anton Vorobyov, an associate professor in the Department of Cardiology at Surgut State University, commented: “We monitored the patients for four years, which allowed us to evaluate the role of these serum indicator levels in the long term and determine specific threshold values, whose elevation is associated with negative outcomes.” According to the scientists, the proposed approach not only predicts complications but also allows for the customization of treatment. For example, using telemedicine techniques to remotely monitor at-risk patients.
