Sri Lanka narrowly clinched a thrilling four-wicket victory against a strong Hong Kong side in the Asia Cup at Dubai International Stadium on Monday.

Wanindu Hasaranga emerged as Sri Lanka’s hero, maintaining composure to guide the team to a win.

After Hong Kong posted 149 for four on a challenging pitch, Sri Lanka seemed set for an easy victory at 119 for two after 15 overs.

However, Hong Kong made a remarkable comeback, taking four wickets for just eight runs within 12 balls, reducing Sri Lanka to 127 for six.

Amidst the chaos, Hasaranga (20 not out from nine balls) remained steady, ensuring Sri Lanka’s victory with seven balls in hand.

Opener Pathum Nissanka (68 from 44 balls) was the top scorer for Sri Lanka. His run-out in the 16th over triggered the collapse, but Hasaranga made sure Nissanka’s efforts were not wasted.

Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka acknowledged the need to avoid such batting errors against stronger opponents in the tournament.

“At that point, it felt like our hearts were in our mouths. There are areas I’m disappointed with, especially the first three bowling overs and the 16th over where we lost key wickets, including mine,” said Asalanka, who scored two runs.

“In T20s, these things happen, but we must not let them become a pattern. We need to analyze and improve.”

Earlier, Nizakat Khan led with 52 not out (38 balls) and opener Anshy Rath scored 48, helping Hong Kong set a competitive total.

“I’m incredibly proud of how the team performed, especially in batting,” stated Hong Kong captain Yasim Murtaza.

“Nizakat and Anshy’s partnership was vital. We missed some chances, but overall, I’m proud of the bowlers and batters.”
