The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a release that “the attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces around the Heglig oil fields on Saturday resulted in the death and injury of several civilian workers.” It added that “the Sudanese government may be forced to suspend operations in the field for security reasons and evacuate employees to protect their lives,” according to Sudanese news agency SUNA.

The statement continued: “The terrorist militia has continued this barbaric behavior since the rebellion began in April 2023, targeting infrastructure and vital buildings that provide essential services to the Sudanese citizen. However, these attacks have transcended harming national interests to targeting the interests of the Republic of South Sudan and other foreign companies using the Heglig area for the export of South Sudan’s oil.”

Last Wednesday, America and its partners from the United Nations and the Middle East called on the warring parties in Sudan to maintain humanitarian aid supply routes, according to a joint statement published by the U.S. Department of State.

In April 2023, intense and widespread clashes erupted between forces and Rapid Support Forces in various areas of Sudan, as both sides attempt to control vital locations. Arab, African, and international parties mediated to achieve a ceasefire, but these mediations have not succeeded in reaching a permanent ceasefire.
