During a meeting with an Arab media delegation, Al-Shara said, “I will not hesitate to make any agreement or decision that serves the interest of Syria and the region.” He added that there is advanced discussion regarding a security agreement between Damascus and Tel Aviv.
Yesterday, Saturday, the validity of the news circulating about the imminent signing of a security agreement between Syria and Israel, on September 25, was questioned. The Coordination and Communication Office in the Ministry’s media department responded to an inquiry from “Syrian Television,” stating that what was published in this regard is “unfounded.”
Citing high-level Syrian sources, it was reported that “the two sides will sign a security agreement under the auspices of the United States, preceded by a speech by the Syrian President for the transitional phase, Ahmed Al-Shara, at the United Nations on September 24.”
In the same context, the Director of the American Affairs Department in the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Qutaiba Idlabi, denied any meeting between Al-Shara and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next month.
On another note, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani met last Tuesday in the French capital, Paris, with an Israeli delegation. The discussions involved issues related to de-escalation, non-interference in Syrian internal affairs, monitoring the ceasefire in Sweida, and reactivating the 1974 agreement, with American mediation.
