The Syrian authorities postponed the parliamentary elections, which were scheduled to take place from September 15 to 20, due to the incomplete preparation of some activities.

According to the Spanish news agency EFE, last Sunday, quoting a representative of the Syrian electoral committee, Nawar Najmeh, “the electoral committee has not yet completed the formation of the structures responsible for organizing the voting and accepting candidates for the elections.”

An agency source indicated that “the postponement will allow time to consider the names of candidates for positions in the electoral bodies and to study the applications submitted.”

The sources stated: “In order to ensure fair representation in the People’s Assembly for the three Syrian provinces (As-Suwayda, Al-Hasakah, Raqqa), and given the security challenges these provinces are facing, the Higher Committee decided to postpone the electoral process in the mentioned provinces until the appropriate conditions and safe environment are available to conduct them. Their seat allocations will remain reserved until the elections are held there as soon as possible.”
