Turkey Discovers 75 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas

Anadolu Agency reported, on Wednesday evening, that Bayraktar announced the discovery of 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas last May in the ‘Gökçepe-3’ well through exploration activities in the Black Sea. The Turkish minister confirmed that it is enough to meet Turkey’s gas needs for a year and a half, explaining that with this discovered quantity, household gas needs can be met for 4.5 years, which is also equivalent to an economic value of $30 billion at present.

He pointed out that onshore oil exploration continues and these figures will rise by the end of the year, noting that renewable energy production in Turkey increased by 7,000 megawatts during 2024, and this year the record will be broken with an increase of 10,000 megawatts in solar and wind energy.

The Turkish minister highlighted that it generates emission-free electricity and has a significant contribution to ending foreign dependency in the energy sector. Turkey also aims to have a nuclear capacity of 20,000 megawatts by 2050.

Bayraktar emphasized that negotiations are ongoing with some countries regarding the inclusion of 4 to 8 reactors in the Sinop (north) and Thrace (northwest) regions, in addition to the Akkuyu nuclear power plant with a capacity of 4,800 megawatts in Mersin province (south).
