British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated in a release on the UK Foreign Office’s website that this support comes at a crucial time. However, he emphasized that the effectiveness of the aid is contingent upon a significant increase in the access to humanitarian assistance. He added, “We in the United Kingdom are doing all we can to improve the situation, but we must be clear: this aid will have no tangible impact unless Israel allows its safe entry and distribution to the civilians in need.” The British government pointed out that the restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of sufficient aid into Gaza have caused a “man-made disaster,” calling for urgent action to alleviate the crisis. He further stated, “This new funding will make childbirth safer and is a vital step towards improving the conditions for mothers and their newborns. But for this support to succeed, it requires the Israeli government’s approval for entry. Israel must protect civilians, including healthcare workers and health infrastructure, and facilitate the access to medicines, medical equipment, and healthcare supplies.” An American newspaper reported last Friday that British authorities “prohibited” Israeli representatives from participating in the DSEI international arms fair held in London, due to developments in the Gaza Strip. The newspaper quoted a spokesperson for the exhibition saying, “The Israeli government’s decision to escalate militarily in the Gaza Strip is unwise. Therefore, we can confirm that no Israeli government delegation will be invited.” Sources informed the newspaper that the British government notified Tel Aviv that “the ban might be lifted if Israel shows a commitment to respecting international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip and other disputed areas.” This decision comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin approved, on August 21, the army’s plans to take control of Gaza City and deliver a “final blow” to the Palestinian Hamas movement. Earlier this month, the United Nations officially declared “famine in Gaza,” marking the first instance of such a declaration in the Middle East, warning that 500,000 people are facing “catastrophic hunger.”
