According to the document: “Clause 149, Ahmed Hussein Al-Sharaa is added to the list of individuals, groups, and organizations involved in terrorist activities and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.” Accordingly, the Republic of Moldova publishes a list of persons, groups, and entities involved in terrorist activities, as part of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions. Earlier on Thursday, the United Nations Security Council voted on a resolution to lift sanctions on Al-Sharaa and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. Under the Security Council resolution, the names of the Syrian leader and the Interior Minister were removed from the sanctions list 1267 imposed on “ISIS” and “Al-Qaeda” (two terrorist organizations banned in Russia and many countries). In December 2024, the EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, announced the Union’s readiness to reopen its representative mission in Syria. She indicated that the Union is preparing a new approach to resolve the situation in Syria, which includes a review of sanctions while maintaining its influence over Damascus.
