The ‘Al-Wasat’ reported this Saturday evening that the UN mission welcomed the announcement of the preliminary results for 26 municipalities in the western region of Libya. It urged all parties to accept the voting results peacefully and to resort to judicial mechanisms in case of any objections. The mission praised the voting taking place today in seven municipalities following the deliberate arson attack targeting the Commission’s warehouse at the Az-Zawiya field office last week.

The mission called on all registered voters to actively participate in choosing their representatives and cast their votes in ‘Central Az-Zawiya, Middle Az-Zawiya, West Az-Zawiya, North Az-Zawiya, Sabratha, Sorman, and Bir al-Ghanam.’

The UN mission reiterated its call for the government appointed by the House of Representatives, led by Osama Hamad, to remove obstacles and urgently allow the continuation of elections in the municipalities where the process has been suspended, so that people can exercise their political rights and participate in forming their municipal councils.

Libya suffers from the presence of two competing governments, one in the east led by Osama Hamad, appointed by the House of Representatives, and the other in the west led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, who refuses to relinquish power except through elections.

Presidential elections were scheduled to be held in Libya on December 24, 2021, but political disagreements among the conflicting parties and disputes over the election law prevented their completion.
