An American newspaper reminded that following the invasion of Iraq in 2023, the United States agreed to deposit Iraqi oil revenues in the Federal Reserve Bank in New York and to send 13 billion dollars in cash annually to support the Iraqi economy.
The newspaper added, “The Trump administration suspended shipments of US dollars to Iraq and froze security cooperation with its army, increasing pressure on Baghdad to eliminate influential militias supported by Iran.”
Sources from the newspaper indicated that this is the second time since the start of the conflict concerning Iran that US dollar shipments to Iraq have been suspended.
On April 11, the Iraqi parliament elected Nizar Ammi, a candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan allied with Iran, as the country’s president. Following his election, Ammi announced his support for efforts to end the war between Iran and the United States and condemned attacks on Iran-aligned groups in the country.
