The court in Paris condemned former French President Nicolas Sarkozy today, Thursday, for conspiring in a case related to financing his election campaign with Libyan-sourced funds. The court charged Sarkozy with offenses, including illegal campaign financing and corruption. The investigation into this case began in 2012 after media outlets published documents alleging that Libyan authorities transferred 50 million euros to Sarkozy to finance his 2007 presidential campaign. The prosecution was seeking a seven-year prison sentence against Sarkozy, who served as the French President from 2007 to 2012. Investigators claim he struck a corrupt deal with the Libyan government.

This case is said to involve Libyan agents, a convicted terrorist, arms dealers, and accusations that Gaddafi supplied Sarkozy’s campaign with millions of euros that were shipped to Paris in suitcases. For his part, Sarkozy has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the case is fabricated and politically motivated.
