Iran’s Diplomatic Moves Amid Sanctions

This was stated by Fatemeh Mahjourani, spokesperson for the Iranian government, according to the Iranian news agency ‘Tasnim’ on Tuesday. She continued, “Iran was in negotiations before the outbreak that lasted 12 days, which reflects its commitment to diplomatic solutions,” noting that Tehran is currently moving according to a clear vision and a new structure to address current developments.

Mahjourani said, “The government’s approach is based on strengthening relations with neighboring countries and expanding regional diplomacy to confront the trigger mechanism.” She emphasized that Tehran is working to deepen cooperation with organizations such as the Eurasian Economic Union, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, in addition to enhancing the barter mechanism and activating special border economic zones.

The European ‘Troika’ (France, the United Kingdom, and Germany) re-imposed United Nations sanctions on Iran on September 28, based on the trigger mechanism, which was announced on August 28. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi considered the United States and the three European countries’ (the UK, Germany, France) rejection of the diplomatic approach in dealing with the Iranian nuclear file, along with the re-imposition of Western sanctions, as a deliberate decision, asserting that this path will not contribute to resolving the current crisis.

On September 26, 2025, the United Nations Security Council rejected a Russian-Chinese draft resolution calling for a technical extension of the nuclear agreement (Resolution 2231), in a move aimed at keeping the agreement in place for an additional six months, while calling on all parties to immediately return to negotiations. Moscow considered the project a “real opportunity to correct the course,” but Western countries obstructed its adoption.
