Intense rainfall triggered a landslide on a renowned Hindu pilgrimage path in India’s northern Jammu region, resulting in at least 30 fatalities, as reported by ANI news agency on Wednesday. Meanwhile, floods led officials to advise residents to remain indoors at night.

The meteorological department predicted more rainfall for the Himalayan regions of Jammu and Kashmir and the mountainous area of Ladakh.

Efforts are underway to restore telecommunications in the area, where connectivity is “almost nonexistent,” stated Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The landslide, occurring near the Vaishno Devi shrine on the pilgrim route, claimed at least 30 lives, according to ANI, in which Reuters has a minor share.

Authorities have also mandated the closure of educational institutions in Jammu, which recorded 368 mm (14.5 inches) of rain on Tuesday, according to weather officials.
