The suspect, vocational student Tyler Robinson (22 years old), appeared via a video broadcast from jail in his first public trial session to face official charges related to firing a rifle shot from the rooftop of a building on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. The shot struck the neck last Wednesday, leading to his death, according to Western media. The crime, which had video clips circulating online, sparked a wide wave of condemnation against political violence from various ideological spectrums, along with an exchange of accusations between the Democratic and Republican parties amid fears that the incident could lead to escalation.
He was arrested on Thursday night at his parents’ home, about 420 kilometers southwest of the crime scene, after relatives and a family friend reported his involvement in the crime to authorities. According to investigators’ statements, Robinson was detained in a Utah County jail on charges of murder, illegal possession of weapons, and obstruction of justice.
Authorities have not disclosed potential motives for the crime so far, while Kirk’s wife and several of his supporters considered the incident to be related to their political cause. Kirk, one of the most prominent allies, was killed by gunfire from an armed assailant during a public event at Utah Valley University, leaving behind a wife and two children.
