Italian fashion icon Donatella Versace declared on Thursday that the world will “never forget” designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away at 91.

“Today, the world lost a giant. He made history and will be remembered forever,” she shared on Instagram.

Armani, a symbol of modern Italian style and sophistication, blended his designer flair with business savvy, leading a company with an annual turnover of approximately 2.3 billion euros ($2.7 billion).

“With profound sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its founder, creator, and relentless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house stated.

He had been ill for some time and missed his group’s shows at Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June, marking the first time in his career he didn’t attend his catwalk events.

Armani remained the sole proprietor of his brand, working closely with a dedicated team of long-time colleagues and family members.

Nicknamed “Re Giorgio” – King Giorgio in Italian – he personally oversaw every detail of his collections and business operations, from advertising to styling models’ hair before they hit the runway.

A funeral chamber will be accessible on Saturday and Sunday in Milan, his cherished home city, followed by a private funeral on a date yet to be disclosed, the company announced.
