During a press conference, Trump said, “This is somewhat of an exploratory meeting, and President Putin invited me to participate. He wants to be involved (in resolving the conflict in Ukraine).” Trump indicated that he “intends to then organize a meeting between President Putin and Zelensky, while his presence will depend on necessity.”
Trump added, “I will meet with President Putin and see what is on his mind. If the agreement is fair, I will communicate it to the leaders of the European Union, NATO, and also Zelensky. I think I will call him first out of respect, then them,” he stated.
Earlier today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will head to Russia next Friday. Trump, during a press conference on his security measures in the U.S. capital, said, “I will meet with Putin. I will travel to Russia on Friday. I don’t like staying here (in Washington) and talking about how insecure, dirty, and disgusting it is. These graffiti have covered this once-beautiful capital.”
Despite the multitude of issues expected to be discussed between the two presidents, primarily the Ukrainian issue, there are expectations that agreements might be reached, especially given the overlapping interests of the two countries in the region, and the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on the situation in the Middle East, in addition to the Palestinian issue, which is a central point of tension in the region.
Experts expect that many issues in the region could move towards resolution if an understanding is reached between Putin and Trump in the near term, though this may not be resolved in the first meeting.
